Iris felt trouble breathing. Oh gods, she couldn't do this. The sun had begun to set, and this would be the last sunset her father would ever see. How could she do this? Take all the sunsets away? He loved sunsets, watching them. It was cruel to take them away from what they loved, and for what? To protect her pack? What good would it do for her pack if she crumbled the second he was gone?
If she couldn't handle it after Gabe, Sable and Giselle left and Bobby was de-
She couldn't finish the thought. She had yet to properly name what she was going to do. Looking up, Iris knew she was on the verge. The verge of doing what could be the worst thing she'd ever done, the verge of not doing what she needed to do. If this was going to happen she- she... She had to know it was worth it. Iris had to know that if this happened, she wouldn't be completely alone.
Then the she-wolf caught sight of him. Linden was entering the camp after a hunt, and Iris noticed that Joelle was gone. Probably on a separate hunt. Taking the opportunity, Iris approached Linden the moment the party dispersed in desperate directions. "Linden..." She breathed, her eyes portraying the fear, confusion and desperation that she hid from everyone else. "I.... I can't." She couldn't explain, not here in camp, and she found herself just looking at him.

It had been a good hunt, and Linden was flying high- vibrating with anticipation and eagerness. He dropped his two rabbits on the pile, gazing at them for a moment until he realized Iris was at his side. He glanced up and over at her, his eyes darkening. "Iris, we've been over this!" he hissed at her, gazing around at the pack. "Come on," he continued in a louder voice. "Why don't we patrol?" He turned and padded off, not giving her a choice.
He started for the falls. It was not a common patrol spot, but it was ideal for discussing plots that he didn't want overheard. "Now," he sighed, as he turned to her. "What's the problem? What do you mean, you can't? We talked about it, didn't we? It's for the good of the pack! Isn't that enough?" He shifted closer, speaking close to her ear so she would hear him, his fur pressed to hers, one of his front paws against hers. She had to go through with it... he couldn't. If he tried, then they could, and would, kill him.

Standing there, Iris looked down, knowing he was right. She was being so weak. When he announced their leave, Iris made a show of nodding her head and forcing herself to look put-together until they leave the camp, head and tail up.
Once they are on their way, Iris's head goes down. Her tail between her legs. Gods, help me. I can't do this. Linden was close, and she felt safe. Iris let him press up against her, and his voice in her ears made her feel better. Pulling away just enough to turn and look in his eyes, She hesitated before replying.
"I know... I- I want to protect the pack. They're my top... top priority." She shifted uncertainly, "But... But Gabe will hate me. Giselle will hate me. My mother will hate me! Who will I have?" Her eyes searched his imploringly, searching for the answer she needed to hear.

Iris eased up to him, and Linden nuzzled her lightly. "You can do it. I know you can. I have faith in you, Iris, and I never put my faith in someone weak. You're not weak. You can do this. It's all up to you, though. I can't be with you when you carry out the plan. Can I trust you to go through on it?" He pulled back to blink at her. "They won't. I promise. They might not understand at first, because this is unusual, but they'll come to their senses in time. But I'm behind you, and so are the rest of our half of the pack. Do it for them. The dogs must be driven out, and this is the only way it can happen. Be strong. Okay?"

His words were reassuring, and perhaps it was almost pitiful of her to be so reliant on his approval of her. The she-wolf just wanted someone's approval and to her, everything that had taken place up until this point with her family had been signs of disapproval. Something she had done shook their faith her enough to take the title of heir from her.
Linden had faith in her, and that was something that was irreplaceable to her. However, that didn't get rid of the anxiety completely, because no matter what he said, she was simply waiting for her plan to fall through, for him to turn to disapproval as well.
"I'll go through with it. I will." She finally responded, trying to sound confidant in herself.

"Good, that's good." Linden smiled. He had to show her the utmost confidence, had to continually assure her that yes, she could do it, and he had faith and trust in her. If she thought he had doubts, then she would have doubts, and the plan would fall through. She had to do it. She was part of the family, and though they no doubt would be shocked by what she had done, they would not react the same way as if he had done it. They would kill him; at the worst, if she failed, they would only exile her.
"You can do it, Iris, I know it. You're strong, and you want the help the Pack in any way you can. Right?" Spontaneously, he licked her on one ear, placing his head on hers, feeling the press of her body against his. She was strong, and beautiful, and maybe it was wrong of him, but he could hardly keep his eyes off her. Not just for her rank, but for her beauty; she might not acknowledge it, or even notice it, but she was indeed rather pretty, and she wondered why she'd never taken a mate. Joelle would kill him if she found out... but she'd have to find out first.

Yes, Iris' confidence in herself was interwoven in the acceptance of others. She had grown up off of the praise from her father and it was what she thrived off of. If another didn't have confidence in her, than she questioned herself. Linden's confidence in her, feigned or genuine, had an impact and to her it was a big impact.
However, she didn't expect for him to show such affection as he licked her ear. Surprised, she gave him a side-glance, a question in her eyes that she could not voice. Was he... really?
Iris had never really considered the idea of taking on a mate. She hadn't needed one, the acceptance of her family was enough. She had never particularly cared for pups, and whenever she did decide she wanted to play with one, Iris could simply pad on over to her sister. Of course, she hadn't done that in the past few moons. If Linden had tried anything a few moons ago, before she ostracized herself from her family, Iris would have pulled away, she didn't need it and she didn't want to be the wolf who messed with another she-wolf's mate. That would get messy quickly.
Right now, in the absence of anyone else's approval, Iris wanted to make sure she kept Linden's. If she denied him, would he still want her at all?
Besides, she'd be lying is she said she didn't want it herself, if even a little.
So, Iris let him lick her ear, put his head on hers. She pressed back and let herself enjoy the closeness. The she-wolf turned her head toward his chest and she took in a breath. His scent was comforting.
"I do." She breathed.
