While her mate had always had a straying eye, he'd never acted upon everything, certainly not to her knowledge, and while the large amounts of time her spent with Iris could easily be justified (They were third and second in command, he was helping her heal the pack now that they had freed it from the rats), he'd always deny anything and calm her fears whenever she brought them up. She'd even been in a good mood that day, ready to tell her mate she was expecting another litter. She was a little fretful, having already lost them before, but with Dila and Jenlee, she hoped this was a sign from the Gods they would be healthy, as their older sisters.
She'd left to calm her fears and relieve herself, giving herself a mental talk. No point in worrying about what was to come, what would happen would happen. She sent a silent pray to the Gods and then made her way back to the camp.
But someone was standing outside her den. She approached quietly and instead ducked behind a tree, perking her ears to listen to the conversation. Part of her wish she hadn't snooped. The rest of her was glad. What she heard infuriated her. As first, she wanted to spring out and take the Rhea's scruff in her jaws and throw her across the clearing, marking her claim of her mate. How dare she! Shock was the only thing that kept this from being her course of action. But Linden's words infuriated her even more. How dare he deny them! How dare he lie to her! How dare he take another behind her back and then lie to her face as though he were a faithful wolf. How. Dare. He. He hackles were shaking in fury and she angry was she, she didn't even notice the sound of her daughter's paw steps following the other she-wolf out of camp. Then Iris's words rung in her head. You're right, they deserve better.
As much as she wanted to kill the she-wolf... she was right. Suddenly every time Linden had rejected and humiliated their daughter, their little girl, played back in her mind. No. No. She wouldn't do this again. Never again. No more.
By the time she regained her composure, Iris was gone, along with Dila, though she didn't know this yet. She was about the start a fight like none other. Bigger than the fight that had driven the strays from their home. She may even kill the male. She stepped into the entrance of their den. She didn't know it, but two whole hours had passed since she'd heard the words Iris had said. So shocked had she been. She stared down at the wolf she'd called her mate and loved for so long. Her fury clear in her eyes. "Linden."
