Athene padded mildly along, head lowered to sniff the ground, taking in all the interesting smells the meadow had to offer. Other dogs had been here, and other canines too. There was a wolf smell, there a coyote, some kind of feline here... a yank on the leash and she was pulled along, abandoning the appealing scent and tagging along after her owner. Shortly afterward, they paused, and the man waved a tennis ball under her nose. She followed the motion, and when he released her from the leash and threw the ball, she tore off after the thing happily.
But she hardly gave it more than a brief sniff before peeling off for a far more interesting pastime. Smells everywhere! Her owner spoke, and she caught her name in the words, but she ignored it. A sigh, and a whistle. She ignored that too. More forcibly, her name was called. She looked up at him, wagged her tail, and then sauntered off. Vibrations- he was after her. Athene bounced away, evading him, and kept going, trotting further across the meadow. It bordered the forest, and there was the most fascinating, fresh scent coming from there. Athene loped toward it.

While she missed the private time a proper mentor would have given her, she liked learning all the other things too, and while scouts were still needed for patrols, to keep eyes on the territory, they weren't called scouts anymore. Nor the hunters hunters, or the soldiers or guards. One of the dogs had suggested a name, which Gabe had taken up. Knights. Knights sounded pretty cool. Stalking through the forest, dark as the night. The dog had explained they were a kind of special oldier, not just the night itself. Which was awesome.
Knight, had a nice ring to it. Well, the squires had been sent out in two teams, one to check the borders, and one to hunt. Faith, who still hadn't been able to see the whole of their territory, opted for patrol, and as soon as their teachers were out of sight, the squires split up. Probably not the smartest thing, in hind sight, but they all wanted to check different parts and this way it would get done faster right? And besides, what would come after her over here? A dog? Pfft.
But then there was one, and Faith stared wide eyed at the merle dog. She was huge! Bigger than Luke. But she seemed friendly enough, sniffing about in the grass as a human yelled at her in the distance- a human! Faith had never seen one before. She ducked down and blinked in the direction she heard him. It looked weird, with all it's bright colors, and it walked almost like a bird, with two legs and then wings. But no feathers. Weird. As the dog came closer she wagged her tail and flickered her gaze from the human. Would he come after her with one of those lightning sticks the dogs had described?

The shadows moved, and Athene startled, head snapping up, eyes focusing. She located the wolf and paused, the old fear stirring again. But this wolf was small, and Athene was much bigger, nearly full grown in fact, and far bigger than the wolf. Her tail wagged and she started forward, sniffing deeply. Her owner was still calling to her, his voice growing closer and closer. Athene squealed, hopped toward the black wolf, tail wagging furiously. "Hi there! Wow, you're small- I thought all wolves were big!" It didn't occur to her that Faith might be young, not an adult yet.
And it didn't matter to her. "Let's play!" Because what was more important to a pup? She dropped into a bow, wagging tail rocking her hind end from side to side. "My owner loves these games! See, he's chasing. Now we have to run away, and if he catches us, we're It." Her name was screamed again, and even she could detect a note of panic in it. She didn't understand why, and didn't bother to puzzle over it. "Let's go!" she cried, and bolted into the woods. "Follow me!"

Play, with the human? Faith shot a look over her shoulder back at the forest where she was supposed to be marking their border, but she was still younger and decided taking a short break couldn't hurt. She nodded her head enthusiastically and bounced off, wagging her tail as well when she entered the forest, going further into the pack territory. Would she get in trouble? She didn't think so, it's not like they were hunting and taking food from the pack. "Hi, my named's Faith," she barked, introducing herself as she ran alongside the great dane, "I don't think we should lead your human too far into the forest, my pack won't like it." She explained.
She slid to a halt and looked behind her, but the human as gone. Wow they were slow. No wonder they needed those lightning stick she heard about. "It's not really good at this game, is it?" She asked the dog about her human.

"Hi, Faith!" Athene barked, and her tail wagged harder than ever. She glanced back over her shoulder at her owner, who was standing still, eyes wide, and she thought he might be trying to pick her out of the shadows among the trees. "Okay," she replied. "But he probably won't come much farther. He's really not very brave. And if he can't see me, he tends to give up." She bounced a step farther, glancing around. "No, not very good. He gives up way too easily. He's not much fun at all, really. But he wanted to take me out for a walk and wanted me to come along. I'd rather be playing with my friends at the farm. Do you know of them? Oh, they're fun! I spend most days over there, playing with them, and they're so much more fun."
Her owner, with a loud exclamation, slapped the leash against his leg, turned, and stalked off, growling under his breath. Athene glanced around at Faith. "See? Now, let's play!" She reached out a paw, tapped Faith on the end of her nose, and darted off, barking happily. "Slowpoke, you'll never catch me! I'm Super Dog- watch me run!"

As Athene asked her the question about the farm, Faith shook her head. "Oh no, I've seen it from the border but that's it. My uncle is the Alpha male and he said we'd be in lots of trouble if we went over there and bothered anyone or their prey. He doesn't want to upset anyone or the humans." She explained, nodding her head.
But the human emitted a strange noise and stalked off. It seemed mad that it couldn't keep up, like a pup going to pout. But then she was being tagged and despite whatever words were being said, it was clear it was game time. She hadn't been able to act like this in moons. Since the summer, which seemed like a lifetime ago now. With a pup's joy and energy, Faith bounced eagerly after the dog, her tongue lolling out madly from her mouth as she sprinted along the edge of the border, still tucked safely inside the trees from the sight of human who had followed them in, trying to play the game.
"I'm gonna get you!" She yelled, quickly catching up to the other dog, despite her shorter legs. She bumped her nose into the dappled shoulder and then turned, running to jump over a small creak, not even thinking of the consequences.
