The month before when she'd first felt the kick, Joelle had been beside herself with happiness. She was going to be a mother! And the day was rapidly approaching. They didn't kick and toss as much now, but she figured it was because there wasn't much room to do so. Her belly was huge and she felt nasty, mostly because she couldn't get comfortable no matter what position she sat in in their den. Linden, the loving mate he was, had gathered soft moss her her to bed on, and even that wasn't helping very much. The other dams had told her it's be like this but that once she birthed, she would be able to settle down. She winced as she felt another contraction and paused, whimpering quietly. Linden was out, on a hunt or patrol, she didn't know, but she couldn't wait for him to come back. The contractions were getting closer and closer together and her anticipation was growing. She just wanted her little ones to come out already so she could lick them clean and hold them close.

Linden was flying high. He was Romulus, he had a mate, he had a litter on the way. He had left her an hour or so ago, to patrol a section of the border and then to hunt. He knew Joelle was close to birthing. She had grown so much over the past couple months, he was certain she was going to birth a nice, big litter- at least five. And he paused, bouncing just a little. Nobody was around, so nobody saw, and nothing stopped him from literally bouncing from the joy he felt at his children's impending birth.
Thirty minutes later, he had caught a plump rabbit and was nearing the camp, a spring still in his step. He pushed through the camp and paused for just a moment before padding on to his den. Joelle was there, his lovely mate, and soon there would be pups there too. He was so excited.

| S oon. She breathed. Soon. The contractions were closer and closer together and suddenly she was panicking. What if she was a bad mother? What if there was something wrong with the pups? What if Linden decided he didn't like her anymore? She forced herself to keep taking her steady breaths because she was certainly panicking at this point.
The first one was suddenly there and out and she wanted to twist around to check, but another contraction shook her and she had to wait a few moments to recover. Deep breaths, Joelle. Your first pup was jut born! She turned her head and reached for the first pup. She cooed loudly but realized something was wrong. She knew pups could move or do much more than wriggle, but shouldn't he, her firstborn son, be looking for her milk? No. This wasn't right. He was still? Why was he not moving.
Panic rose in her throat and she felt sick. What was wrong with her pup? She placed her son beside her, and tried to force herself to be calm. Stillborns, they were bound to happen, right? It was sad, but they happened.
Should could hear Linden approaching the den and whimpered as their second pup was born. Now almost feverish with anticipation she retrieved her second pup... only to find another stillborn. Hysterical she let out a choked howl, and whimpered. Why was this happening to her?
